The term Machine to Machine (M2M) is used interchangeably with IoT. M2M is the act of collecting the data from machines, from sensors and devices and then transporting that data on wireless or wired networks and finally delivering that data to a database on a server or system. Then, when a person, system or process uses the data for analysis and action on that data, that is what makes it the Internet of Things. In other words, M2M is the mechanics and IoT is the purpose. Generally, M2M is considered a subset of IoT.
