Now, to go back to IoT: At the highest level there are sensors, connectivity, people and processes. In the example of an industrial IoT solution, there are sensors; many kinds of sensors to measure things. For example, sensors can check to see whether a device is performing up to specifications. They can also measure location, temperature, pressure, humidity etc. There are so many types of sensors and they are an important part of an IoT device that a separate training module is required just for sensors. The data from the sensors and devices are then sent via a data transport mechanism to an application, a person or a process where that data is evaluated and an action is taken. It’s important to note that the data sent is bi-directional. Data sent to a process or person is then acted upon and instructions are sent back directing the devices and its sensors accordingly. For example, if a device sensor measures something such as a rise in the building temperature, that data is sent to an application for evaluation and instructions are returned back directing the thermostat to adjust itself down based on the normal temperature set for that building at that time of the day and year. This is an example of an automated process that does not need human intervention to perform the analysis and take action. Another example are components like motion sensors, door/window contacts, and bed pressure pads installed into the homes of elderly, infirm or rehabilitation patients. These sensors can alert caretakers to falls, wandering patients, and changes in sleep patterns by communicating with multiple sensors to observe activities of daily living to proactively alert caregivers and loved ones to changes in behavioral patterns. Text, email or phone alerts can be generated by a single event, an intersection of multiple events or by inactivity and the caregiver can assist when needed. This is an example of a process that requires a person to analyze and act on the information delivered by the sensors over the network.
