The LX2160A’s performance levels make it suitable for NFV infrastructure installed in a rack in a data center or as customer premises equipment installed in a large enterprise. The LX2160A offers 16 high-performance 64-bit cores to run OVS and the virtualized network functions (VNFs) on virtual machines. It supports 25 Gbps Ethernet that is being widely deployed in data centers with data center bridging support for lossless flow control. VM performance is increased with usage of the 100 Gbps compression/decompression accelerator and the 50 Gbps security accelerators. Arm® v8-based chips are attractive in NFV applications due the competitive and innovative character of this multi-vendor market, yet can look the same to software with common enablement such as OPNFV, KVM or dockers on an enterprise OS such as CentOS, and vendor-neutral data-path APIs such as DPDK. Open source applications such as Open vSwitch and fd.io implement virtual switching that directs data flows to VMs or supports service chaining between VMs, all orchestrated by OpenStack.
